Partner Visa
A student visa would usually allow you to bring close family members as dependents on your student visa. This is defined as:
- A spouse or partner (including same sex partners) who you have been living with for 12 months
- Your, or your partner's children, under 18 or who are still in continuous education (i.e. studying A-levels).
Please note that the work rights granted for the dependent partner will depend on the course of study of the student:
- If the student is studying a bachelor degree, the dependent partner can work up to 40 hours per fortnight.
- If the student is studying a masters degree (coursework or research) or a doctorate degree the partner will have full and unlimited work rights.
Travelling with school age children
for your children are travelling with you as dependants on your student visa, you will have to pay fees for them to go to any Australian school (regardless of whether the school is state or private). School fees vary according to the age of your children and the state or territory that you live in, but expect fees of around A$5,600 to A$18,600 per year, per child.

Visitor Visa
Features of the Visitor visa (subclass 600)
- to visit or for business visitor purposes
- for up to three, six or 12 months.
The eVisitor (subclass 651) visa is free. You must be a passport holder of a certain country. The Electronic Travel Authority (subclass 601) visa has an AUD20 service charge. You must be a passport holder of a certain country.
Requirements
You might be able to get this visa if you are travelling to Australia:
- as a visitor
- for business visitor activities
- to visit family
- on a tour with a registered travel agent from the People’s Republic of China.
If you are in Australia you can apply for the Tourist stream of the Visitor visa online provided you currently have a valid visa that does not have condition 8503 imposed. If you are outside Australia only certain passport holders can apply for this visa online. If you cannot apply online, you can lodge a paper application.
What this visa lets you do
This visa lets you come to Australia for a holiday or to visit family and friends. We will tell you how many times you can enter Australia on this visa:
- You might be allowed to enter only once. If so, you will need to apply for a new visa if you want to return to Australia again after you leave
- You might be able to travel to and from Australia as many times as you want while your visa is valid, but the total time you spend in Australia cannot be more than the period of stay that you have been granted.

Temporary Graduate Visa
The temporary graduate visa (subclass 485) allows you to remain in Australia to live, study or work after you have finished your studies. The visa has two streams: Graduate Work stream and Post-Study Work stream. The length of your stay will depend on which stream you apply for.
To be eligible to apply for the temporary graduate visa (subclass 485) you must
- be under 50 years of age
- hold an eligible visa
- have a recent qualification in a CRICOS-registered course
- meet additional requirements of the relevant stream
You may require evidence of your English profiency as part of your visa application. Take IELTS (The International English Language Testing System) or PTE (Pearson Tests of English), an English language proficiency test for study, work and migration.
At the time of application, if you hold a valid Student visa, you'll already be covered under an Overseas Student Health Cover policy as a condition of your Student visa requirement. You should include evidence of your existing OSHC with your visa application.
However, you'll still need to get a 485 visa health insurance at some stage during the visa processing period in order for your 485 visa application to be finalised. You'll be contacted by The Department of Home Affairs as they will need evidence that you have taken out a policy that complies with 485 requirements prior to issuing your 485 visa.

Skilled Independent Visa
The Visa is based on points system for migrants who have in demand skills. The visa is by invitation and allows the applicant permanent work and study anywhere in Australia.
What is the points based system?
This Visa is based on points, so in general, the higher the points you can gain, the better. You need to gain at least 65 points to be invited for this visa. An expression of interest needs to be lodged in Skill Select, which will give an estimate of your points.
After assessment and if you’re given an invitation, the invitation will communicate the points required to assess the application. When you prepare your application, ensure that you have adequate evidence to support your claims. The government Home Affairs website also has a points calculator which you can use to calculate your points.
What are some of the specific criteria I must meet to apply for the 189 visa?
- Your occupation must be on the skilled occupation list
- Pass the skills assessment
- Be invited to apply
- Qualify with the points test, at least 65 points
- Be aged between 18 – 44 years old
- Have a competent level of English
- Meet the Australian health and character requirement
What is the process of applying for a 189 Visa?
- Submit an expression of interest through Skill Select to start your application
- Wait for the invitation from Department of Home Affairs for the visa application
- Documents such as proof of identity, English results, partner and dependent documents, skill assessment documents, expression of interest documents.
- Once you receive the invitation, you have 60 days to apply for this Visa.
- You will be notified once your Visa is received, and if you’re granted a bridging Visa
- If refused, you will be notified why, however, no refund is available.
- If approved, you will be given a Visa number, start date, and any visa conditions.

Regional Sponsored Visa
Permanent residence visa. This visa is for employers who want to sponsor employees who are overseas workers for a permanent visa to work in Australia.
The employees must be classified as a skilled worker from overseas or skilled temporary resident currently in Australia. To be eligible for the RSMS visa,
the employee is required to have qualifications and work experience as specified by ANZSCO for the nominated occupation.
Two entry streams / application methods:
- Direct Entry Stream (new application)
- Temporary Residence Transition (for existing 457 visa holders employed for two continuous years by ANU).
Requirements
- University sponsorship is required
- Must be a full time position that is available for a minimum of 2 consecutive years.
- Minimum salary applies
- Occupation and work experience specified by ANZSCO and certified by a Regional Certifying Body
- Meet the Australian health, character and English requirement
An Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (RSMS) visa is an employer sponsored permanent residency visa for employers wishing to sponsor highly skilled workers in low population and regional areas (such as the ACT) for a minimum of two consecutive years.
Eligibility
This visa is for employees classified as a skilled worker from overseas or skilled temporary residents currently in Australia.
To be eligible for a RSMS sponsorship the position must be
- full time and available for at least two consecutive years
- classified under an occupation listed in the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO code).
- remunerated in accordance with market rates
- certified by a Regional Certifying Body (ACT Government)
